About the ICISG

The International Cancer Information Service Group (ICISG) is an independent, international organization composed of Cancer Information Service programs. The mission of ICISG is to assist organizations to provide high-quality cancer information and resources on all aspects of cancer to those concerned or affected by cancer throughout the world. The ICISG includes seasoned cancer communications experts who have, for the past 15 years, been assisting cancer organizations worldwide in developing and expanding their cancer information services. ICISG membership includes more than 50 organizations from 35 countries.

What is a Cancer Information Service?

A Cancer Information Service (CIS) provides accurate and up-to-date information to cancer patients, their families and friends, health-care professionals, and the public. It is defined as a one-on-one interaction between a client and a specially trained information specialist. A CIS provides high-quality, personalized interactions by telephone, email, or in person.

Workshop prior to the 2010 World Cancer Congress

This pre-conference workshop is presented by the International Cancer Information Service Group (ICISG) in collaboration with UICC. The objective of this workshop is to present a basic framework and key elements of a successful cancer information service based on worldwide experience. The workshop is designed for organizations interested in starting a cancer information service or enhancing an existing one.
The workshop will use presentations, case studies and discussions. There will be some concurrent sessions for those just planning or starting a service and those with prior cancer information service experience). Topics include:

• The importance of cancer information and a cancer information service
• Core elements of a successful cancer information service and case study
• Planning for a cancer information service
• Tools and tips for setting up and managing your service
• Staffing
• Resources and technology
• Communications
• Call monitoring
• Managing an existing cancer information service
• Recruitment and retention issues
• Quality management and evaluation
• Continuing education
• Information centre management

The workshop will be in English. Participation is free but is limited to 50 registered atttendees at the UICC conference. Pre-register at cis@cancervic.org.au
