Eligibility
Applicants for a travel grant must:
- work or live in a low- or middle-income country (World Bank classification)
- work, be engaged, or study full time in cancer prevention and control or a related field; or be an accredited member of a patient advocacy group
- have an adequate command and understanding of the English language to participate actively in the Congress
- have no connections to the tobacco industry
- submit their curriculum vitae and a letter of justification detailing why they wish to attend the Congress
- only applicants submitting an abstract will be eligible for a travel grant. To qualify for a travel grant, both abstract and travel grant requests had to be submitted by the deadline on the 31st of January 2010. Travel grant applications received without abstracts will not be considered. Should your abstract not be selected for presentation at the congress, the travel grant will not be allocated.
Application material and requirements (to be submitted preferably by email):
- Completed hand signed and dated Application Form.
- Applicant’s application signed by the Department Head or equivalent of your home organization.
- Personal Curriculum Vitae of the candidate.
- Justification: This should take the form of a short description of the candidates’ current activities and how participation in the 2010 World Cancer Congress would enhance their work (minimum 1 page, maximum 2 pages).
- Letter of endorsement on organizational letter head and signed by the Head of the department.
- Application Closing Date: 31 January 2010
In order to be included in the selection, a complete application with all items listed under the points 1 - 5 mentioned above, must be received by the UICC Congress Secretariat / Fellowship Department in Geneva by 31 January 2010 latest. Please email signed and scanned application to fellows@uicc.org. Should you not be able to scan the application form, please fax it to +41 22 809 1810.

Contributions to costs
As last year, UICC will provide a contribution to your travel expenses based on your geographical provenance:
1. Participants based in Central Asia and Asia Pacific
- Free registration - accepted travel grant recipients must also register on-line and select the item “Successful UICC Travel Grant”
- 3 night accommodation in a pre-assigned low cost hotel from August 18-21 (any extra night will be at your costs). Please contact Pacific World (UICC appointed accommodation agency) for confirmation.
- The reimbursement of the contribution to your travel costs will be done by bank check at the congress.
2. Participants based in Eastern Europe
- Free registration - accepted travel grant recipients must also register on-line and select the item “Successful UICC Travel Grant”
- 3 night accommodation in a pre-assigned low cost hotel from August 18-21 (any extra night will be at your costs). Please contact Pacific World (UICC appointed accommodation agency) for confirmation.
- The reimbursement of the contribution to your travel costs will be done by bank check at the congress.
3. Participants based in Central & South America, Caribbean and Africa
- Free registration - accepted travel grant recipients must also register on-line and select the item “Successful UICC Travel Grant”
- 3 night accommodation in a pre-assigned low cost hotel from August 18-21 (any extra night will be at your costs). Please contact Pacific World (UICC appointed accommodation agency) for confirmation.
- The reimbursement of the contribution to your travel costs will be done by bank check at the congress.
Notes
1. Grant payments
The costs contribution will be paid to all beneficiaries of travel grants, the amount allocated is final. Due to Chinese bank regulations, this amount will be paid by bank check at the congress. A dedicated “Travel Grant” counter will be operational during the following opening hours:

Confirmation of your travel grant as well as evidence of the travel expenses incurred - Please note that evidence of travel will in no case allow a request for supplementary payment- and a copy of your passport and visa will be requested. Failure to present these documents will lead to no payment.
2. Discounted airfare
UICC has appointed the Star Alliance Network as the official airline network for the World Cancer Congress 2010. To receive a discount of up to 20%, please call the reservation office of any participating Star Alliance member airline and quote the event code CA02S10. Registered participants plus one accompanying person travelling to the event are automatically granted a discount of up to 20%, depending on the class of travel.
Discounts are offered on published business and economy class fares, excluding website/internet fares, senior and youth fares, group fares and Round the World fares.

3. Low cost accomodation
UICC has appointed Pacific World (PW) as its hotel accommodation agent for the congress. Low cost hotel rooms have been booked for Travel grants beneficiaries. After having received your Travel grant confirmation, you must contact PW to confirm your hotel room. Should you not do this before 15 April 2010, your room will be cancelled. You are also requested to confirm acceptance of your Travel grant by contacting the UICC secretariat. Should you fail to do this by 15 April 2010, your Travel grant will be automatically allocated to another participant.
