Invitation only event It’s Everyone’s Business A unique meeting Event to be held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel at 10:30 – 17:00, Shenzhen, China The International Union Against Cancer along with its partners, the American Cancer Society, LIVESTRONG, the World Economic Forum and the World Health Organization will be hosting the 2010 World Cancer Leaders’ Summit on 19 August 2010 in conjunction with the 2010 World Cancer Congress. The Summit will be officially convened by Dr. Chen Zhu, Minister of Health of the People’s Republic of China and hosted in collaboration with the Shenzhen Municipal Government, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association and the Chinese Medical Association. A select and distinguished group of internationally renowned leaders from the health, government, philanthropic and corporate sectors will be assembled to discuss progress in the global fight against cancer and contribute to a long-term plan supporting the implementation of the World Cancer Declaration – a global call to action developed by policymakers detailing 11 targets which, if achieved, will help reverse the cancer epidemic by 2020. The World Cancer Declaration is a tool to help bring the growing cancer crisis to the attention of government leaders and health policymakers in order to significantly reduce the global cancer burden by 2020. It represents a consensus between government officials, public health experts and cancer advocates from around the world who are committed to eliminating cancer as a life-threatening disease for future generations. The Declaration outlines 11 targets to be achieved by 2020 including: significant drops in global tobacco consumption, obesity and alcohol intake; universal vaccination programmes for hepatitis B and human papilloma virus (HPV) to prevent liver and cervical cancer; dramatic reductions in the emigration of health workers with specialist cancer training; universal availability of effective pain medication; and dispelling myths and misconceptions about cancer. As the custodian of the Declaration, UICC encourages priority actions to achieve the Declaration’s targets locally and nationally and promotes a comprehensive response across the globe.
